AmeriCorps VISTA Team

The Center is home to the Health and Justice VISTA team, which seeks to increase local community capacity to serve individuals involved in the criminal justice system and/or impacted by the opioid crisis. Our team supports AmeriCorps VISTA members based with us at CHJT as well as with several partner agencies: Preventing Overdose and Naloxone Intervention (PONI), the Rhode Island Hospital Center for Primary Care, the Rhode Island Center for Justice, the Rhode Island Department of Corrections, and the Rhode Island Public Defender.

Our VISTA members expand access to overdose prevention training and naloxone distribution in Rhode Island; help to facilitate layperson rescues of victims of opioid overdose; support the development of community-based prison reentry strategies; and expand access to healthcare and reentry services for currently and formerly incarcerated Rhode Islanders and people with opioid use disorder. They are a vital capacity-building resource to local programs.

We utilize a public health framework that centers equity in planning and decision-making to deepen understanding of how the criminal justice system works from pre-arrest through adjudication, incarceration, and reentry and its impacts on families and communities.
